My practice is concerned with the representational challenge of temporality: of lingering, lasting, forgetting and withdrawal. I am interested in the artist as witness, one that, through remembering, may offer an embodied understanding of historical narrative. Making work that involves historical research around lived experience makes it impossible to draw a clear line between fact and fiction. This impossibility manifests in my work in a range of mediums and forms. Born and raised in Tehran and living in Los Angeles, I envision the city as an imaginary space between the two definitions of the word asylum: ‘the protection granted to a political refugee’ and a ‘mental institution.’ This liminal thinking space deeply informs my practice experimenting with form and nonlinear narrative.
