The Aadizookaan is a group of artists, media makers, cultural workers deeply rooted in Southwest Detroit that support one another doing creative dynamic storytelling work. Our work is in the modes of music, film, design, and storytelling. The Aadizookaan seeks guidance from ancestral indigenous-based knowledge systems for traditional & contemporary multimedia to help produce stories for the many layers of communities, businesses, & people. Aadizookaan [Ah-dih-zoh-kahn] is an Anishinaabe word [Indigenous people of Detroit] that means the sacred spirit of the story. We are contemporary artists that root ourselves in Anishinaabe and other ancestral knowledge systems and philosophy in order to uplift stories of the people, so we can continue the beautiful work of bettering our quality of life in the universe.
